Masa of Echo Park - Echo Park, CA- 4/24/2012
Greetings Fellow Travelers!
Cousin ChiMax was very glum.
CM: Was Not.
TL: Anyways, I knew just what would cheer him up. After nearly two years of searching I found a place in Los Angeles that made real Chicago style Deep Dish Pizza. Owned by a Chicago Ex-Patriot, Masa (as an institution) prides itself on making authentic deep dish pizza. Anyone from Chicago will tell you that simply making pizza in a deep dish pan does not automatically qualify it as Chicago Style.
CM: Anyone who says that should be taken out back and taught a lesson.
TL: Fair point. Without delving into too many specifics, let’s just say that Masa does it the right way. If you are a Chicago Ex-Pat like myself, you should pay a visit to Masa. Bear in mind, once you order you wait around 40 minutes for your pizza to be ready.
CM: That’s how it oughta be! This is something to savor and enjoy, NOT TO STUFF IN YOUR CRAW!
TL: Masa has a very relaxing atmosphere, warm lighting, and very friendly staff. It’s a good place to go with friends and it also is romantic in terms of design. There were a lot of couples there. And most importantly, the food is delicious.
CM: Oh boy.
TL: They have a pretty extensive menu however I think most people go there specifically for the deep dish. In any case, we highly reccommend it.
CM: Go now.

The Getty Museum- Los Angeles, CA-April 24, 2012
Greetings Fellow Travelers!
April 24th was my birthday. Coincidentally it was also the birthday of my Cousin ChiMax. We decided to celebrate our mutual birthday by going off on an elaborate adventure that took two days. Today I’ll show you some of the pictures from our visit to the Getty Museum in Los Angeles!
This is a bust of Janus, the two faced god who simultaneously looks to the future and the past. He is the god of transitions, beginnings and ends, and in a larger sense time. ChiMax thought it would be funny if we posed as the two faces of Janus.
ChiMax: Yes, I did.
TL: The security guard wasn’t pleased, was he?
ChiMax: No, he wasn’t. He wasn’t much fun anyway.
I can’t remember what this next painting is. We just thought it looked funny, so we stood like the guys in the work.
The third painting is a portrait by Renoir of Albert Cahen D’Alvers. He had a pretty impressive mustache that seemed very Lorax-like.
ChiMax got into a staring contest with Jean-Leon Gerome’s bust, made by Carpeaux.
ChiMax: He was asking for it.
TL: What was he looking at?
ChiMax: Some painting of boats.
Last but not least, here is a picture of ChiMax with Los Angeles in the background.
ChiMax: The ‘skyline’ is pitiful. At least the ocean looked nice.
TL: Be nice.
ChiMax: What did I say?
Anywho, later we’ll put up a few more pictures of our big adventure.

Hidden Treasures-Topanga Canyon, CA
Greetings Fellow Travelers!
I paid a visit to Topanga Canyon a few days ago (as may remember my trip to the Banksy art wall) and stopped by a local Vintage shop called Hidden Treasures. It is a strange and wonderful place. They sell all kinds of delightful things: Victrolas, Old radios, Sandalwood Soap, vintage clothes, bizarre statues, and patches. I was tempted to by a 1930s Tuxedo jacket with tails, but ended up passing on it. I did purchase a patch that reads “Try It You’ll Like It!”. The “it” refers to traveling, right?
Anywho, if you find yourself in the neighborhood, stop by and check out their wares. They are friendly people. They also have a velociraptor on the top of their store. It made me feel like I was in Jurassic Park. (Clever girl…)

The Home Depot Center-Carson, CA-April 14, 2012
Greetings Fellow Travelers!
On the 14th of April, I had the pleasure of attending a match between the LA Galaxy and the Portland Timbers. It was the first time I attended a professional soccer (football to most) match and by extension the first MLS contest I ever attended. I freely declare that the sport is much more exciting in person than on the television. While the stadium was not packed to capacity, the still rather large crowd of soccer fanatics made their voices heard. It was a treat to watch American Hero Landon Donovan play. I was thrilled to see David Beckham’s legendary “bending” in person. Donovan scored an equalizer towards the end of the first half, the galaxy took the lead on an Edson Buddle goal late in the second half, and in stoppage David Beckham launched one into the net. Final score? 3-1 Galaxy.
A great time was a had by all. Except the Portland Timbers.

NOTE:
Some of our fellow travelers pointed out that I typed the wrong location name. Of course the Galaxy play at the Home Depot Center. The Honda Centeris in Anaheim, where we have traveled before to watch the Anaheim Ducks battle the Buffalo Sabres. Thank you for spotting the error.

The Topanga Canyon Art Wall- Topanga Canyon, CA
Greetings Fellow Travelers!
I know it has been a while since I last posted a picture of my travels, but I am sure you will love these snaps. A few days ago I traveled up to Topanga Canyon, CA, a beautiful land just north of Los Angeles. Known for many things, Topanga Canyon serves as a home for hippies and wayward souls. As is the case, many artists find there way up to this magical land. Rumor has it that famous street artists Banksy (see Exit Through the Gift Shop which is brilliant) even paid the area a visit and threw up one of his stencils which led to an explosion of art on an otherwise nondescript wall. I decided to investigate and found the Banksy Piece along with many other works of art. I noticed some wooden boards had been placed on the building, protecting additional Banksy pieces, and upon which more art was placed.
I hope you enjoy these pictures and (should time permit) that you travel up to this area yourself and take in some interesting sights, sounds, smells, and experiences. Also pay a visit to Banksy’s website to see more of his wonderful and highly political art:

The Lorax Movie-Culver City, CA 2.8.2012
Greetings Fellow Travelers!
It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for…I went to see The Lorax movie yesterday. I walked all the way to the Rave Theater at the Howard Hughes Promenade in Culver City to watch the movie. The movie currently is #1 at the box office and was made by the same group that made the big hit Despicable Me. There are a lot of things to enjoy about the movie. The animation is top notch. Danny DeVito was delightful. It was fun while still driving home the central message about the importance of conservation, environmentalism, and doing right by nature.
Rather than spend too much time talking about the movie in it’s self-contained world, I wanted to address something else. There over 70 product tie-ins for a book that is against mass consumerism. Before you stuff your craw with Dr. Seuss themed heart attack inducing foodstuffs at IHOP or buy that Mazda SUV, ask yourself if you really need it. Go out to a park like Cousin ChiMax did (you’ll see pictures later), go to nature preserves (like I did at Muir Woods), go on a hike, appreciate nature, and plant trees. I regularly give money to tree planting charities and plant trees myself. In the words of Dr. Seuss:
Plant a new [tree]. Treat it with care. Give it clean water, and feed it fresh air. Grow a forest. Protect it from axes that hack.
Because unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing’s going to get better. It’s not.
I encourage you to see the movie, but please don’t forget what it’s really about.

Fox Hills Park-Culver City, CA 3/3/2012
Greetings Fellow Travelers!
While on a jaunt around the lovely Fox Hills Park with my cousin ChiMax, we stumbled upon this very interesting tree which looks a lot like a Truffula Tree. Isn’t the resemblance astounding? Ah, the wonders of nature.

Greetings Fellow Travelers!
Look what came up on the TV! If this doesn’t get the attention of the folks @thelorax then nothing will. What are the odds? Anyways, I plan on taking ChiMax with me to see the movie tomorrow when it releases.

Cousin ChiMax! And The Honda Center! ~ Anaheim, CA 2/29/2012
Greetings Fellow Travelers!
Last night, my cousin ChiMax (pronounced Shy-Max) finally arrived. He told me months ago that he was coming out here for a visit and then disappeared. Naturally we were worried but he has a habit of traveling, shall we say, thriftily? As you can see, he put himself in a flat rate USPS box and mailed himself here. It’s his standard mode of transportation. This time though, his box was misplaced by a postal carrier and he was missing. Thankfully he arrived safe and sound. Fittingly, he arrived on Leap Day. Welcome, Cousin ChiMax!
ChiMax-Thank You.
TL-After his safe arrival, we decided to celebrate by traveling to Anaheim, CA to pay a visit to the famous Honda Center. The Pond, as it is affectionately called, is home to the Anaheim Ducks, formerly the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Last night we received a pair of free club level tickets to see the Ducks battle the Buffalo Sabres. Though fans of the Chicago Blackhawks, we couldn’t pass up a chance to see NHL Hockey, especially when it was free. As you can see, we had some pretty fantastic seats. They have a fun fan interaction program at the Pond where you can email a picture that you took at you and your crew and they will put it up on the JumboTron. We sent your picture in but didn’t notice when it went up on the JumboTron itself, but as we were leaving we noticed on one of the TVs that they had in fact put our picture up! In the end the Sabres won 2-0, there were more fights than goals (4-2), and we had a splendid time.
